One major theme of The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street by Rod Serling is That Fear and suspicion are destructive. For example when Goodman's car turns on out of nowhere, after that they all accuse Goodman. After this it destroyed the neighborhood's trust in Goodman because he couldn't explain why his car turned on. The next example is when a woman says that Steve's wife has been working on something in the basement. His wife backs Steve up by saying that it is a ham radio set that she bought him but the neighbors don't budge and that destroyed their trust in Steve as a leader. Finally the theme is shown when charlie shoots the unknown figure. The figure ended up being Vanhorn, so after they all found out it was Vanhorn Charlie got defensive and all the neighbors accused charlie of being the scapegoat after he destroyed a life.
