  • Hello, my name is Jocelyn, and I am going to be talking about my experiences with literacy. We are going to start here in Waconia where I grew up and where my literacy experiences started.

  • My earliest memory of reading and writing all began at Bayview Elementary School. We would start our day off by sitting in a circle and listening to our teacher read us a story. This very quickly became my favorite part of the day. From then on, we would learn to read and write ourselves.

  • My sophomore year of high school I began working at McDonald's and have definitely struggled with language barriers. A lot of the people who work in our grill area speak Spanish so in many instances I have had to learn how to properly communicate. I had taken some Spanish classes in middle school and early high school so I could understand some things and try to translate the best I could.
  • I use my literacy skills on a day-to-day basis whether it's with doing homework or even sending a text message. I also watch a lot of videos and sometimes have subtitles on which is another example of how literacy comes in handy outside of the classroom.
  • Reading and writing gives us so much more than we give credit for. These things have helped us come a long way when it comes to communication especially with new technology. Being able to read for me makes me only want to read more, more stories, more articles, and encourages my learning.

  • Sometimes we may not always be able to communicate directly through talking, like if you are in a loud place and can't hear someone or someone speaks a different language than you. I've found that context clues and body gestures are the best indicators on what someone is trying to say. Being able to understand body language and social cues is very important in many different situations.
