Ralph uses the conch shell to call the other boys into another meeting. He lets them know that there are no adults and need to organize a few things to look after themselves.
In the meeting, Ralph decides to make the rule that only the boy holding the conch can speak, and only Ralph can interrupt the one who is holding the conch
Jack reminds Ralph about the pig they have found trapped in the vines and says they need hunters to kill animals or meat. Jack decides that he will be in charge of hunting along with the other boys.
One of the younger boys, claims that he saw a snakelike "beastie" or monster the night before. This causes the other boys to become frightened that the monster might be prowling the island. The older boys reassure the group that there is no monster
Ralph offers reassurance that they will be rescued and will need a signal fire to attract passing ships and planes. As the word spread, Jack takes over the group leading them up the mountain to start the fire.
The boys go on to finds leaves, twigs, branches, and everything they can use to make a fire. They use Piggy's glasses to focus the sunlight and set the wood on fire.
