- Junior was born with excess cerebral spinal fluid. He was supposed to be brain dead, but survives a surgery to remove the fluid. He has 10 more teeth than others and Indian Health Services only does major dental work only once per year. Junior’s white dentist thinks Indians feel only half as much pain as white people, so he gives Junior only half of the medicine. Junior is also nearsighted in one eye and farsighted in the other. Indian Health Services has only one style of thick black eyeglass frames for him to choose. He is very skinny, but has big hands and feet. Other kids make fun of him for the size of his head. Because of his brain damage he has seizures, stutters and lisps, the other kids make fun of him and beat him. Junior draws cartoons, because he hopes to get rich and famous to leave the rez one day.
- Junior wishes he could draw food and make it real. No matter how hungry he gets though, he knows eventually his parents will come with a bucket of KFC. Being hungry makes food taste better.
- Junior tells the story of his best friend, his dog Oscar. Oscar is the most dependable thing in Junior's life. But Oscar gets sick. The family doesn't have enough money to take Oscar to the vet. Junior says, with better opportunities, his mom would have been a college professor and his dad would have been a Jazz musician. Junior's dad gets his rifle and takes Oscar outside. Junior runs away. junior hears the gun shot.
- Junior feels bad after Oscar dies. But his friend Rowdy tells him to get over it. Junior doesn't want to go to the powwow, but Rowdy convinces him to go. At the powwow Rowdy uses a shovel to damage a minivan. Junior runs away and ends up in the Andruss triplets camp.
- The triplets push Junior around and call him names like hydrohead. Rowdy decides to get back to the triplets for hurting Junior. When the triplets pass out drunk, Rowdy sneaks into their tent and cuts of their eye brows and their long braids. To not get caught, Rowdy starts the tumor that another Indian tribe did it.
- Junior loves Geometry and he is exited for his first high school geometry class. When he was young, Junior says, he liked right angles so much he used to sleep in the closet, but he stopped when Mary, his sister said he was just trying to crawl back into the womb. According to junior Mary spends 23 hours a day doing nothing in the family basement. Junior is also excited to try out for the basketball team. On his first day he gets his geometry book from his teacher Mr. P a lonely short white man. When Junior realizes, that he has the same book in his hand his mom had thirty years ago, he throws the book in Mr. P's face.
