Sir Gawain uses the axe then chops off the Green Knights head in completing the challenge. But the Green knight did not die. He picked up his head and told Gawain to find him after one year to finish the challenge

You can stay in my castle until you have rested
After a year, Sir Gawain keeps his word to fight . He takes an adventure to find the Green Knight. But he ends up finding a castle in the middle of the forest. Lord Bertilak gives Gawain a shelter for the moment but he has to make a deal with the lady of the Castle.

Sir Gawain is very happy after they took his horse strait to the stables and gave him a room to stay in until he was rested

"I can't deny my guilt. My works shine none too fair. Give me your good will. A henceforth I'll beware."
The Green Knight then reveals that the castle, the exchanges, and Lord Bertilak was him and of his doings. Gawain realizes that he broke the exchange's rules. He then promises to wear the girdle to represent his failure. The Green Knight forgave Gawain and praised him as an honorable man.
