  • First Europeans
  • Historical Events: Iowa
  • French Canadians Louis Joliet and Jacques Marquette are the first non-Natives to come to Iowa.
  • Lewis and Clark
  • The land is exceptional!
  • Louisiana Purchase
  • Explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark are sent to scope out the new territory. After a good report, many people began settling in Iowa.
  • Iowa was part of the 15 million dollar Louisiana Purchase, when the United States bought a great deal of land from France.
  • The Louisiana Purchase included South Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and parts of Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Minnesota, and Louisiana.
  • The Black Hawk War
  • So many Europeans were settling in Iowa that the Native American tribes were being forced out. They fought for their land in the Black Hawk War, but they lost.
  • Statehood
  • Iowa was the 29th state admitted into the Union on December 28, 1846.
  • Iowa became a state in 1846.
  • President Hoover
  • Herbert Hoover, who is an Iowa native, becomes the 31st president of the United States.
