”Still I Rise” was published in 1978 in Maya Angelou’s book of poems And Still I Rise. It is an inspirational and empowering poem about overcoming injustice and prejudice. This poem can be studied on its own for Social Emotional Learning, or can be taught as part of a poetry unit.

  • A simile is a comparison of one thing with another using "like" or "as". An example from the poem is, "'Cause I walk like I've got oil wells pumping in my living room."
  • A metaphor is when something is symbolic of something else. An example from the poem is, "You may cut me with your eyes." This means that the looks people give her cut like knives.
  • Alliteration is the use of the same letter or sound at the beginning of closely connected words. An example of this from the poem is, "Huts of history's shame."
