Refugee is a historical fiction novel written in 2017 that weaves together three compelling stories of families seeking sanctuary in other countries. Students will see themselves in the young protagonists: children faced with tragic circumstances but who, at their heart, are just kids who love their families and want to live in peace.

  • Isabel's story begins in Havana, Cuba after the Maleconazo protests. Isabel's father is threatened with imprisonment and wants to flee to America. Calling the protestors counterrevolutionaries, Fidel Castro allowed a window of time for those who wanted to leave Cuba to leave. 35,000 people fled.
  • United States
  • Mahmoud's story begins in Aleppo, Syria during the Syrian civil war. The war began in 2011 and is increasingly dangerous. Everyone knows someone who has died from the bombing. Mahmoud and his family are forced to flee when their apartment building is bombed.
  • The journey from Germany to Cuba began on a train. It continued on a large cruise ship that it took about two weeks to cross the wide Atlantic Ocean and docked in the harbor of Havana, Cuba.

  • Isabel's journey from Havana, Cuba to Miami, Florida in the United States is by a makeshift boat made by the Castillo family. The two families crowd into the small boat to cross the Florida Straits.

  • Mahmoud's journey from Aleppo, Syria to Germany begins by car to Turkey. They violently lose their car and have to go on foot. The most harrowing part of the journey is by an inflatable rubber boat from Turkey to Lesbos, an island that is part of Greece (which is part of the European Union).

  • Joseph's story begins November 1938 with Kristallnacht, the "night of broken glass", when his father was taken away to the concentration camp Dachau. They are later reunited and set out in 1939 to flee the Nazis and find freedom in Cuba.
