What is sound? Sound is caused by vibrations. The pitch and volume of the sound that is produced is determined by the size and speed of these vibrations. Students will enjoy using the following activities to create diagrams and understand sound waves and their uses.

  • Boats emit a pulse of ultrasound and then detect its reflection. Using the time difference, the depth of the ocean can be calculated.
  • Dolphins emit pulses of ultrasound and use the echoes produced to locate things underwater.
  • MEDICAL IMAGING

  • SEISMOMETER
  • Medical staff can use ultrasound to check on the progress of a pregnancy. By emitting ultrasound and using the reflected sound, a computer can produce an image of the fetus.
  • Seismographs detect infrasound waves and can be used to locate the epicenters of earthquakes.
