Losing weight
Researchers experimented 2,516 teenagers, divided by gender. The teenagers were studied for five years, starting when they were about 13-15 years old
At the start of the study, the teenagers were asked to complete a "diet survey," which included a question about how often they read diet magazines, with 44 percent of females agreeing and 11 percent of boys admitting to read the magazines frequently.
How often do you read magazine articles in which dieting or weight loss is discussed?
The teenager girls who read magazine articles most frequent about weight and dieting loss five years earlier were the most likely to report extreme dieting practices in the follow-up survey.
Food Therapy
These girls were twice as likely to engage in unhealthy weight-control behaviours including fasting, skipping meals, and smoking more cigarettes which is harmful for their health
Although the boy didn't show any patterns to extreme dieting, researchers found out that adolescent girls are more vulnerable to extreme dieting
"Frequent reading of magazine articles about dieting/weight loss was predicted unhealthy weight-control behaviors in adolescent girls, but not boys" wrote by the researchers
