  • Basketball and volleyball were both invented in Massachusetts. The Basketball Hall of Fame is located in Springfield, and the International Volleyball Hall of Fame is located in Holyoke.
  • Harvard University is one of the most prestigious Ivy League schools in the country, and is located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It was started on September 8, 1636, making it the oldest university in the United States.
  • The first lighthouse in the United States was the Boston Harbor Light Station, built in 1716.
