  • Vast DesertsThere are two major deserts in the Southwest: the Sonoran Desert and the Chihuahua Desert. The Sonoran Desert has large, sandy plains and bare mountains, and covers much of New Mexico and Arizona. The Chihuahuan Desert, which is the largest desert in North America, spans from Mexico into parts of Arizona, Texas, and New Mexico.

Spanning across Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and Colorado, this plateau covers about 240 thousand square miles! Located within the Colorado Plateau is the Grand Canyon. A canyon is a deep, narrow valley with steep sides. The Grand Canyon is 217 miles long, and up to 18 miles wide at some points.

The Rio Grande begins in Colorado and flows through New Mexico and Texas to the Gulf of Mexico. This river is over 1,800 miles long! The Colorado River flows through part of Arizona and empties into the Gulf of California. To prevent the river from causing terrible floods, the Hoover Dam was completed in 1936. The Colorado River flows through part of the Grand Canyon!
