The religion of Islam dates back to the 7th century in the ancient city of Mecca on the Arabia peninsula. Today, it is practiced by about 2 billion people all over the world! Islam is the world's second largest religion and its followers account for about 25% of the world's total population.

  • The Hajj is the annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, the holiest city for Muslims. It takes place in the last month of the year. Hajj is a mandatory religious duty for Muslims that must be carried out at least once in their lifetime if they are physically able.
  • A kufi or kufi cap is a brimless, short, and rounded cap worn by men in many populations in North Africa, East Africa, Western Africa, and South Asia as a sign of peace, mourning, renewal, or protection of the mind.

  • A Hijab is a head covering worn in public by some Muslim women as a sign of respect and modesty. Hijab can also refer to modesty wear in general.
  •  The Holy Qu'ran is the Islamic sacred book, believed to be the word of God as dictated to Muhammad by the archangel Gabriel and written down in Arabic. It has 114 sections called suras; the first sura is said as part of the ritual prayer. The Qu'ran is recited in its original Arabic by Muslims all over the world.
