The Book Thief is a historical fiction novel written in 2005. The story centers on the life of Liesel Meminger, a young German orphan raised by foster parents during the rise of Hitler and the beginning of World War II. The author chooses Death to be the narrator, as he is able to convey the scope of suffering of the Holocaust as well as describe the emotional story.

  • Jesse Owens won 4 gold medals in the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany in the 100 m., long jump, 200 m., and 4×100-m. relay. He was African American and disproved Hitler's racist and murderous myth of White/Aryan supremacy.
  • Hitler Youth was a group designed to indoctrinate children into Hitler’s hateful, racist, bigoted ideology and then send them off to war. Millions of children were forced to join whether they wanted to or not with the intent to propagandize an entire generation.
  • Dachau opened on March 22, 1933, a few weeks after Adolf Hitler became Chancellor. In the 12 years of its existence, over 200,000 persons from all over Europe were imprisoned. 41,500 were murdered. On April 29 1945, American troops liberated the survivors.
