New Kid by Jerry Craft

By Lauren Ayube

Twelve year old Jordan loves to draw, and he’s really good at it. He wants to go to art school, but his parents send him to an upscale school away from his Washington Heights neighborhood. As one of the few African American kids at his school, Jordan must learn to navigate making new friends, ignorance, and finding his place in a seemingly foreign land.

Storyboard Text

  • RACIAL PREJUDICE
  • My name is Drew, not Deandre.
  • HOMEROOM
  • I'm sorry. Deandre is a former student. He was a handful!
  • FRIENDSHIP
  • Let's play some Madden, guys!
  • There are many examples of racial prejudice as Jordan navigates school. One example is when Ms. Rawle often calls the African American boys by each other’s names without thinking about who she is talking to.
  • Jordan and Liam become friends almost instantly, even though they come from two very different worlds. Jordan also becomes close friends with Drew, as they have a lot in common. It doesn’t even occur to Jordan that all three of them should hang out until one day when his gran’pa suggests it.
