  • Rulers such as the Mauryan (322-187 BCE) and Gupta (320-550 CE) Empires expanded their territories through conquest and military might. Domesticated Indian elephants were used in battle as well as cavalry, chariots, bows, arrows, swords, and spears.
  • Rajahs ruled and handed down power through families. The Mauryan Empire united India all the way to Persia. King Ashoka spread Buddhism and communicated through edicts carved into stones throughout the empire. The Gupta Empire created a peaceful time nicknamed the "Golden Age."
  • While governments were monarchies, councils were made up of religious scholars and members of the royal family to serve as advisors to the king. Royal governors would rule provinces.
