- In this scene, Lyddie is taking charge and making sure everyone is safe, and then she is going to deal with the bear. This is person vs nature because in the book she has to protect her family from a bear invading her cabin.
- This scene takes place in the cabin, while Lyddie is visiting and finds that someone is already there. Ezekial is trying to escape to Canada for his freedom. This is person vs society because Ezekial is a runnaway slave in this society and slaves are used as machines and not seen as human beings in this society. Ezekial does not consider himself a slave, rather a man running for his freedom.
- In this scene, Amelia and Betsy are arguing in the boarding house. This is Person vs Person because they are arguing about their work hours and how they are being paid, Amelia disagrees with Betsy but she is set on signing the petition.
