- Aki is a young girl of the Ojibwa people. She is13 and has spoken to an elder in her community, who told her that she is ready to begin the journey to encounter her spirit helper and find direction in her life through her vision quest. She has been preparing for about a year, and is now ready to start her vision quest.
- You are ready to find your spirit helper and become an adult. It is time for you to prepare in the sacred womb of mother Earth.
- Aki needs to purify her mind, body and spirit before she is ready to go on her vision quest. She will take part in a sweat lodge ceremony to do this. Once she is purified and restores her relationship with herself, others, and The Creator, she will embark on her vision quest.
- Inside the sacred space of the sweat lodge, also known as the womb of Mother Earth, Aki meditated, prayed, and sung. The sweat leader poured water on the heated rocks in the pit of the sweat lodge, causing steam to rise and cleanse Aki, returning her to the innocence of her childhood. After the 3 hour ceremony, Aki was purified and ready for her vision quest.
- Aki traveled to the spot that she had chosen to be the perfect place for her vision, an isolated field alongside the river. The sounds of the water and nature around her reminded her of how everything is interconnected, allowing her to feel closer to the spirit world. She remained there for four days, drinking little water and refraining from food and sleep to prepare her mind for her vision. She wondered what form her vision would come in.
- Her vision came on the fourth day in the form of a bear. She was excited to encounter her spirit helper, and returned home to have the elders of the community interpret her vision.
- When Aki returned home, she went to her elders to interpret her vision. They told her it meant that she would enjoy great health in the future and that she had a great strength inside of her. She was now a woman, and was happy to have come into contact with her spirit helper and know her role in the community.
- You have great strength and a healthy future Aki. You are now an adult!
