a galvanometer is a tool that detects small currents or small p.d.s., often of the order of milliamperes or millivolts
Hello everyone, welcome to physics class, today we are going to learn about moving- coil galvanometer.
so who knows how a simple moving- coil galvometer work?
A moving coil galvanometer works on the principle that a current-carrying coil placed in a magnetic field, experiences a torque. The moving coil galvanometer springs along with the radial field ensure the deflection to be proportional to the strength of the current.
and please explain why an ammeter should have a very low resistance and a voltmeter should have a very high resistance
yes , that is correct. now who can tell me how can we modify it for use as an ammeter and a volt meter
A galvanometer can be converted into an ammeter by connecting a shunt resistance in parallel . A moving-coil galvanometer can be converted into a voltmeter by increasing its effective resistance and connecting it to a high resistance Rs in series with the galvanometer
Ammeters should have low resistance as it is always connected in series with the circuit. Voltmeter is always connected in parallel with the load
yes, that is correct. and for further information about galvanometer will be explained tomorrow and we will also conduct an experiment so dont forget to bring your lab coats
