- In July 1775, Congress drafted the Olive Branch Petition asking to restore peace, but the King rejects the petition.
- The Treaty of Paris 1783
- In 1776, Thomas Paine wrote "Common Sense," which ridicules the idea that kings ruled by the will of God and a complete break from Britain was necessary.
- The Legacy of the War
- On July 4, 1776, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Roger Sherman, Robert Livingston, and Thomas Jefferson signed the Declaration of Independence, giving rights to the colonists.
- The Costs of the War
- The Treaty of Paris officially ended the Revolutionary War, the United States was independent.
- The Americans won because of better leadership of George Washington, foreign aid from France & Spain, knowledge of the land, motivation, and American spies.
- An estimated 25,700 Americans died in the war, 1,400 remained missing, 8,200 were wounded. Thousands of loyalists lost their property, those who survived had little to no money. They had a debt of $27 million,
