  • Hello Mark, how are you?
  • I'm fine Ryan
  • Mark, I have a problem
  • What's your problem?
  • Well, my problem is I want to know how tall is the tree i planted ten years ago.
  • Before I answer your question, I have a trivia for you. Do you know that the tallest tree in the world are the redwoods along the coast of Northern Carolina and Southern Oregon. These trees can easily reach heights of 300 feet (91 meters)
  • Oh, really I am not aware of that
  • One way to measure one of these trees is to use the concept of similar triangles. The concept of similarity is very useful in calculating the heights/distances of objects that we cannot measure directly, like the redwood.
  • Oh I see, I should use the concept of similarity in solving my problem. I remember that two triangles are similar if and only if their corresponding angles are congruent and the lengths of their corresponding sides are proportional.
  • Yes correct. Actually there are two ways of measuring the height/distance of an object by indirect measurement. 1.) by using shadows, 2.) using a mirror
  • Thank you Mark, i've laerned a lot from you
  • You're welcome Ryan
