Nixon gave the tapes over but there were 18 and a half minutes cut out, Nixon's secretary was said to do it but was found out that she only cut out 5 minutes making them wonder what happened to the other 13 and half minutes. A prosecutor brought a large amount of evidence to the House Judiciary Committee. 42 more tapes were requested from Nixon which weren't released but, transcripts of the tapes that were made by the white house aid were released. The release started a sensation over the case because of the tapes.
just admit it, you are guilty
After President Nixon gave up the rest of the tapes, he adopted 3 articles of impeachment. In Early August 1974, transcripts were provided for the 8 summoned tapes. The tapes contained “Smoking Gun” which was indisputable evidence that the president had participated in the cover-up and continuously broke the law. Admitting this showed that the president had been lying about his involvement in the break-in. Nixon’s party had also agreed that the president was at fault and that he was a liability issue. His impeachment and removal from office were already certain. August 9, 1974, the president resigned admitting that he made judgments that were wrong but that he always did “ what I believed at the time to be the best interests of the nation”.
