"I shall perform some small service... worthy of a diamond." (pg.105)
Esther went out on a date with Marco, and after he expresses his feelings on who he really loves, he does something he thinks worthy of the diamond.
"Yes or no, it is all the same." (pg.109)
Esther lies awake at night while she can't sleep, write, or eat. She tried writing a book, but her hand writing is outrageous. She also just got rejected from her dream program and is greatly depressed.
Esther didn't have much freedom as a woman living in the 1950s and decides to try and kill herself. She tries to hang herself, but the ceiling is low. She tries drowning herself, but no matter what, she keeps coming up for air. She then tries to overdose on pills and falls into a deep sleep.
"I unscrewed the bottle of pills and started taking them swiftly, between gulps of water, one by one by one." (pg.169)
Esther was found in her basement unconscious. She was brought to an asylum but then brought to another, where she is slowly healing.
Esther is horrified that Dr. Nolan has betrayed her. She has to get shock therapy again and her friend just ended it all. However, Esther's mental health is greatly improving.
You are getting shock therapy treatment.
Your friend is dead.
Esther is going into the conference room. A group of doctors, but mostly the head doctor, will be deciding her fate. Will she get out of the asylum, or stay in?
