Drake encountered extreme cold when searching for the Northwest Passage while sailing up the west coast of North America. Moreover, threats like famine, disease, mutinies, and becoming lost at sea were always a possibility.

- During the way, the passengers replenished their food supply by hunting and gathering. By providing vitamin C in the form of fresh fruit and vegetables and lemon juice on his ships, Captain Cook is credited with eradicating the scurvy epidemic.
