We fit in with each other due to our similar identities!!
Theme Development #1
"It's selfish and horrible, but in this terrible moment, all I want is to be a plain old american teenager. Who can simply mourn without fear."(13.5)

Progress Check #3: Theme by Rebecca Bordeianu
Theme Development #2
"'She has to stay close to home. This is your fault, you know. You're the one who got her that dumb camera. Always encouraging her.'"(11.54)
A theme that develops in the story is that identity influences belonging. The reader sees that Maya struggles with her identity and does not feel as though she belongs in her culture, family, and school. She expresses that her race, love for film, and rebellious nature make her feel excluded in most aspects of her life. All of these things make up Maya's identity, and they also affect where she finds belonging.
Theme Development #3
This moment develops the theme by showing an example of Maya's race affecting her belonging as a teenager in America. Due to Maya's ethnicity, she is treated differently and is forced to behave and think differently. A big part of Maya's identity is her ethnicity. It is important to her, but she wishes she could be American because she believes if that were so, she would fit in and be treated "normally."
Prediction
Maya's love for film is another large piece of her identity that drove her to apply to NYU, without telling her parents, When she had to tell them, they were very upset and told Maya how they did not like her film "hobby." Maya felt as though she was being treated unfairly by her parents, and she knew her parents' expectations for her were not met. This moment developed the theme because Maya felt as though she did not belong in a family that does not support her.
Maya's rebellious nature influences much of her identity. An example of this that develops the theme is when she snuck out of her house to take swimming lessons with Phil. She expressed that this was affecting her conscience, and she felt guilty. This affected her belonging in her family because the trust between her and her family was going away. This lack of trust and honesty affected their relationships, and it affected how much Maya feels as though she belongs in a family she can not be honest with.
"She's hovering, in absentia... hoping doing at least on think my mom asks will soothe my conscience."(7.5)
I predict that Maya will find a sense of belonging without having to change her identity. She will go to college and meet many new people who she can relate to. In this group of people with similar interests, she will feel included and understood.
