Storyboard Text

  • Later in the week, after dinner, my mom and dad sat me down in the living room and they told me what the test results were. They told me that I have dyslexia and dysgraphia and that they affect my reading and writing.
  • I HAVE WHAT?
  • You have dyslexia and dysgraphia
  • It is a condition that affects your reading and writing ability
  • As soon as my parents told me that I have this disability I didn't think very logically, because I was 11 and my mind was racing to only horrible things that happen in medicine. I was sobbing right in front of my parents.
  • Why did this happen to me?
  • Can I take medicine to make it go away?
  • Do I have cancer?
  • Am I going to die?
  • When going to my tutor, Nancy Mason, I would feel a little dumb because she was rewiring my brain to help process words and how to spell them.
  • Why do I have this giant packet of words and sentences?
  • Carter what we are going to do is break down every word in there, then I will teach you why and how to spell it.
  • We would go over words like Wednesday and she would break down why and what I hear are two different things. She would break it down so I can hear his spell out itself.
  • WednesdayWed, Nes, Day
  • Carter spell Wednesday?
  • After going to this tutor for over 2 years , once a week, I started to overcome a lot of my struggles and battles with words and started to figure out words before I started high school.
  • Really?!?!Thank you so much!
  • Carter you don't need me anymore, you are ready for high school!
  • Throughout this process, it has taught me that hard work will always outshine smartness because even though it might take me longer to do a paper or assignment, I'm going to make sure that I'm putting my best work forward no matter how long it takes me.
  • Thank you. I will continue to work hard for my dreams in school.
  • We are so proud of you Carter. You are going to do so well in life with your work ethic
