- Charlie Gordon is a 37 year old man with an absurdly low IQ. He's has a kind soul and a strong heart eager to become smart. 
- Climax
- Charlie has struggled with his disability for all his life. He got picked on at work and being used for entertainment by his co-workers, and he was always bullied as a kid. His teacher, Miss Kinnian, was approached by a scientific program which could increase one's IQ level with just a surgery. Seeing how it's worked on animals and that Charlie could be a good candidate, she offered the position to Charlie, which he gladly accepted.
- Falling Action
- With the surgery done, Charlie begins to feel and act smarter everyday. The scientists feel good about the surgery and think it could be revolutionary. They did tests on Charlie which resulted positive overall, his progression was steady but there.
- Resolution
- The once "dumb" Charlie was now smarter than the scientists who did the surgery on him. They all notice that the animals they did the tests on eventually all revert back to themselves and eventually their IQ will be even worse. Already seeing the symptoms, Charlie takes over the study into his own hands.
- Working day and night he strives on, looking for what might be the problem and what could be fixed. He comes to the conclusion that it is irreversible and that the outcome is inevitable. He feels himself getting angrier and forgetful. It gets to the point where he forgets full words and their meanings.  
- Back to his previous state, Miss Kinnian incredibly was sad, but surprisingly Charlie was happy, a happiness that wasn't seen from Charlie in a long time. He was going away now and leaving New York. Since he would become even dumber than before, he would need professional care. He left a note after saying his thanks and how it was a good experience to learn so may new things, and now it was time for a new chapter of his life.
