Storyboard Text

  • Winston is near a bomb explosion.
  • Winston goes in to a pub to ask questions.
  • Winston goes back to the antique shop that he bought his diary at.
  • Antique Shop
  • This attack is not treated by Winston or anyone else as something significant. This demonstrates just how normalized and constant war and violence is in the lives of the average citizen.
  • Winston takes an interest in some of the items.
  • Winston goes into the pub, despite knowing how dangerous it is. He does this to ask an older man questions about how life was before the revolution. The man tells him about capitalist society, and what it was really like. However, he was unable to get a clear answer as to weather or not the quality of life is better now.
  • Winston is shown a room with no telescreen.
  • On his walk, he sees that shop that he bought his diary at. It contains many things that would be looked down upon by The Party, but Winston still fells drawn to. He knows that it is a risk to even be near the shop again for to long but he cannot resist. This, combined with him going in the pub to ask questions, shows how Winston is starting to take control of his life, even in the face of danger by the thought police.
  • Winston notices a decorative piece of coral. He knows that it serves no real purpose, so the Party would disapprove, and might even label him as a though criminal. However, he still feels the need to have to for its beauty. This further demonstrates his growing discontent with the Party. It is implied that these actions are almost as much an act of political protest, as they are for his own desires.
  • Wow, this is amazing!
  •
  • The owner of the shop brings Winston to a room with a bed, and with no telescreen. Winston is shocked by this because he rarely if ever sees a room like this without one. He starts to realize all of the things that he could do in this room without the party knowing, and debates renting it. This shows just how disobedient he really is. This also opens up the door for him to a variety of personal freedoms.
