The biggest impact I gained from Gina's story is to not limit a student based on their disability but to think outside the box to provide modifications and adaptations.
Inclusion is also very important as there were so many people in Gina's life that accepted her and allowed her to participate along with other children such as the roller rink.
With modifications and adaptations, Gina was able to do many things such as swimming, participate in dance class stretching and many more activities.
I knew prior to reading that culturally relevant teaching is important. It helps students connect better to the lesson by making connections to their prior knowledge
From the reading I now know that Paraprofessionals might have strong connections to the community, family, businesses and families. With this connection, this can benefit the teacher by adapting lessons to students lives outside of the classroom.
I also know that by teaching students cultures and traditions, students will be encourage to accept cultural diversity . This will create more acceptance in our communities.
An impactful moment in Gina's story was the amount of learning that was happening outside of schools. Services started when Gina was very young and this helped Gina better prepare for school such as the PT that was needed to teacher her to sit.
Gina underwent treatment and services that not only was outside of the school system but even out of the country. Her family's dedication and devotion to Gina showed in her progress.
It is so important for a teacher to have open communication with family as families are aware of the teaching that is happening in the classroom and can offer their input or suggestions and vice versa.
It was not only apparent in Gina's story but also the reading, the importance of teacher and family communication. Families are such a big part of a student's life and have been known to be significant contributors to the special education field.
I realized now they work as Alternating Teaching where one teacher will teach and another will pull students to work in small groups for enrichment. This is often focusing on building their reading and comprehension skills.
I am currently experiencing co teaching in my student teaching experience. Our classroom is integrated so we have some student who need extra help. We have one regular teacher and a special education teacher.
I was very inspired by Gina's story and how much the people around her and her family worked so hard to push her. I was inspired by her story as her family never gave up on her. The most inspirational quote from the Gina's story was "I can't focus on what she can't do. I need to focus on what she can do. I need to focus on her quality of life"
The hospital staff told a mother her child would be "too difficult to care for" and to "hope for the worse". With her family support and unconditional love, Gina was able to do so much with her life and had such a large impact on the people around her.
