Another device used is pathetic fallacy through the rainy, scary atmosphere that mirrors the mood conveyed in the scene. A doll is shown in the background.
  • SXF: Rain, thunder and lightning
  • This frame (frame two) shows the main character walking down a hallway, exploring her new environment. It features darker lighting to convey a sinister and evil atmosphere for the scene. Iconography is also used through the appearance of the doll in the background that be seems to following her.
  • In this frame (frame three), an example of iconography is the painting in this frame as (as seen in the previous frame) the painting is seemingly following her with its eyes. This is scary as being followed is a fear that many people have. It puts forth the idea that the house itself is alive and filled with unknown horrors.
  • In frame four, the main character walks into the bedroom and is viewed from the POV of the doll. Diegetic sound is utilised through the rain and lighting which develops the idea that the setting is evil, haunted and creepy.
  • (Frame five) The doll is sitting in the middle of the room and it is seen through an over the shoulder shot of the main character. The costuming aspect of mise en scene is also present in this scene. We can see the outfit being worn by the doll. It is one that is quite old (Around the 1800-1900’s), giving the impression that the doll has been around for a long time.
  • In this frame (frame six), the lights go off inside the bedroom, again giving off the impression that the house itself is alive/can do extraordinary things. It uses dark lighting to allow the next frame to be exceptionally frightening.
