  • Tom stopping to talk to George in the Valley of ashes
  • "Gatsby and I in turn leaned down and took the small reluctant hand. Afterward he kept looking at the child in surprise. I don't think he had ever really believed in its existence before" (Fitzgerald 52). This quote shows how Gatsby is completely shocked about Daisy's daughter even though he had known about it before. He never fully believed it and now that she is in front of him he can't deny it.
  • Switching cars before going home
  • "About Gatsby! No, I haven't. I said I'd been making a small investigation of his of his past" (Fitzgerald 128). This quote shows how Tom making an investigation into Gatsby's past and questioning him starts a fight between them. They both are putting words into Daisy's mouth because they fighting over her but they are both actually fighting selfishly and not asking Daisy what she wants.
  • Daisy hits Myrtle
  • "In one of the windows over the garage the curtains had been moved aside a little, and Myrtle Wilson was peering down at the car" (Fitzgerald 162). This quote shows how Myrtle sees Tom, Jordan, and Nick and thinks Jordan is Toms wife. This is happening while Tom and George are talking about the yellow car.
  • The others driving up after she is hit
  • "You two start home, Daisy said Tom In Mr. Gatsby's car" (Fitzgerald 296). This shows them getting into their own cars which is different than how they were on the way there. This is an important detail for what happens in the next scene.
  • "The "death car" as the newspaper called it, didn't stop; it came out of the gathering darkness, wavered tragically for a moment, and then disappered around the next bend" (Fitzgerald 317). This is the moment when Daisy hits Myrtle with the car but continues to drive without stopping.
  • "The other car... Myrtle Wilson, her life violently extinguished, knelt in the road and mingled her thick dark blood with the dust" (Fitzgerald 317). In this scene Myrtle is found dead and obviously hit by a car.
