He was born in the city of Manchester, England on February 25, 1917, of a Catholic family, his mother, Elizabeth Burgess, was a singer and dancer, while his father, Joseph Wilson, played the piano in dance halls, and sold door-to-door encyclopedias.

Burgess studied English Literature at Xaverian College and the University of Manchester, graduating in 1940. That same year, he entered the Royal Army Medical Corps, and the Army Educational Corps, where he remained until 1946.

Family

During his time in the army he married Llewela Isherwood Jones in 1942. In December 1943, he had two children, Liana Macellari and Paolo Andrea.

Disease

An inoperable brain tumor with little chance of long-term life was diagnosed. This fact inspired him to write with the intention that his wife, Lynne, could live comfortably on the income from the royalties. He retired from teaching and became a full-time writer, living with the disease for several years.

He wrote five and a half novels in a year, after the brutal diagnosis. She wrote and published more than fifty books covering a wide variety of subjects throughout his career.

His most famous work was the novel A Clockwork Orange written in 1962.
