  • Hi there! Let's take a moment to reflect on the cool things I've learned this semester during my time in BER 631!
  • First and foremost, I must say that I am in no way an expert on qualitative research. I still have so much to learn! In the following slides, you will see the main concepts that stuck with me during my time in this course. I do need to continue refining my interview question skills and navigating the true purpose of preliminary coding and thematic analysis of data. That is a new concept and may take more practice to adjust to. Now that that disclaimer is out of the way, let's begin!

  • I enjoyed learning the differences between subjectivity, positionality, reflection, and reflexivity. These were all concepts that I struggled with differentiating in the past. (1)
  • Oh really?! I don't have much background on those concepts. Can you briefly explain them? (2)
  • Wow! Thanks for clarifying (4)
  • Of course! Subjectivity is who you are in the research process and it changes over time. Positionality shapes how you operate as a researcher. Reflexivity is NOT the same as reflection. It is when we examine ourselves and reflexivity is an examination of self in relationship to others. (3)

  • I believe that qualitative inquiry prompts the researcher to truly examine themselves and their motives. This class has taught me to consistenly examine myself because I am evolving each day. Our humanity shapes how we do research and it is necessary to acknowledge that. (1)
  • Thanks for this valuable experience, Dr. Shelton! (3)
  • The advice I would give to fellow novice researchers would be to always have the end result in mind. For example, since we just finished interviews, I would say that while preparing interview questions, think of the direction in which you're trying to go. Here are some steps I learned along the way: make sure your interview questions align with the research questions, take a semi-structured approach to yield a more conversational interaction, and ensure your research purpose and statement have your vision in mind.
