- France Capturing American Ships
- Oh No! America is going to come after you.
- (France) OH HO HO! You betrayed our treaty, and tried siding with the Britain when you said you were going to be neutral?
- We are capturing you now out of retaliation!
- In addition to the amount you have already paid, we will require some more money which we can loan back.
- The XYZ Affair
- Stop attacking our ships! We want them back!
- We will require 10 million dollars to help us, and you can then expect the return of your ships.
- Who do you think you are?
- Our names do not matter but we stand for the Great Country of France.
- We will put millions towards our defence but not one cent for tribute.

- If you steal our ships, we steal yours! In fact we have! This is (undeclared) WAR!
- Peace! We will give you back your ships! Please don't attack us!
- Out of retaliation from America breaking their neutrality and negotiating with Great Britain, France captures over 300 American ships.
- France sends unnamed diplomats who become known as XYZ demanding millions of dollars that will help them in the war with Britain and in exchange will give them back their captured ships. The Americans deny the request and say they would rather spend money in defense rather than paying the French off.
- President John Adams made an order to start capturing French ships. The French declare peace and give back America's ships.
