  • Pastoral Societies10,000 years ago
  • A modern example of a hunter and gathering society are the Bushman in southern Africa. They were nomadic, which means they had to follow their source of food. Women gathered vegetation while the men hunted. The very old and young helped where they could. Hunter and gathers had a shaman, or a spiritual leader who has a higher prestige, but still needs to gather food.
  • Agrarian Societies 5,000 years ago
  • A modern example of a horticultural society is the Samoans, who are indigenous people of the South Pacific. People started to use hand tools to raise crops. Food production increased and as a result, so did the population. These societies formed settlements. Because of the material surplus, not everyone had to work. Social inequality was greater issue. They believed in only one God.
  • Industrial Societies 1750 A.D.
  • A modern example of a pastoral society are the Bedouin people from Saudi Arabia. These societies still were nomadic. Those deemed elite were the ones with the power. Pastoral societies also believed there was only one God and believed that God was directly involved in the well-being of the world.
  • Postindustrial Societies1973 A.D.
  • The Amish are a modern day Agrarian Society. The plow, irrigation, writing, and metals tools were invented. Fields became larger, which means more food and a population increase. A variety of jobs-from farmer to builders were now available. Money replaced bartering. Social inequality was at its worst. The population majority, slaves or peasants, were left to do the work. Men were of social importance, while women were left to do support tasks.
  • China in a modern Industrial Society. People started to turn to steam boilers to operate their machinery. Skyscrapers, automobiles, and other modern conveniences came in effect. Men and women left their homes to find work, so family isn't the center of work, learning, or worship and ties are weakened. The kind of work has a lot to do with your way of living. There are single parents, divorced families, single people, step-families, and divorced people. Social inequality has decreased. The demand for political voice has increased.
  • The US is a modern postindustrial society. We rely on factories and goods produced from machines. Electric devices are used for almost everything. Many jobs are used to help process information. There is not one main religion, and for the most part, all genders are equal. Social status is not as important, but government officials and people with more money, tend to have more power.
