- Today we will be learning about how WWI started. I will teach this through the acronym, M.A.N.I.A
- Militarism: the principle or policy of maintaining a large military establishment.
- We will begin in the early 1900's, with 'M': MILITARISM
- Germany, France, and Russia were all in a competition to expand their armies. If one became weaker, they were susceptible to attack.

- In 1914, all of the major powers were linked by alliance. The alliances created contention, making war more likely.

- Next is NATIONALISM
- Nationalism is anideology that emphasizes loyalty, devotion, or allegiance to a nation ornation-state and holds that such obligations outweigh other individual or group interests.
