  • A guy needs somebody- to be near him. A guy goes nuts if he ain't got nobody. I tell ya a guy gets too lonely...
  • I get lonely. You can talk to people, but I can't talk to nobody but Curley. Else he gets mad. How'd you like not to talk to anybody?
  • 
  • When Lennie comes into Crooks' bunk, Crooks instigated Lennie about George leaving him. However, Crooks later explains that he was only saying those things because being alone and having nobody to be around makes people insane and was envious of Lennie. Companionship is important as Crooks' shows how being isolated and avoided can make someone feel.
  • As Lennie is talking to his dead puppy, Curley's Wife comes in and starts talking to him. When Lennie explains that he shouldn't be talking to her, she expresses her feelings about being shunned by all the men on the ranch. Curley's Wife explains that she gets lonely having no one to talk to and how she could have had a better life. Companionship is important as Curley's Wife explains how having no one to talk to makes her feel.
  • Because of its old age and disabilities, Carlson "convinces" Candy to allow him to kill Candy's dog. However, once Carlson takes his dog away, Candy goes quiet and blankly stares at a wall. Even though he "allowed" Carlson to kill his dog, Candy insisted on keeping him. Companionship is important as Candy seemed to go emotionless after they took his beloved dog of many years.
