  • The Ottoman Empire, likely the most well known of the Gunpowder Empires invaded and ended Constantinople. After besieging the kingdom for 55 days, they ended up destroying the 4 mile wall around the kingdom, allowing entrance into the kingdom.
  • Lucky for the citizens of Constantinople, the Ottoman army was very merciful. Instead of slaughtering everybody, the Ottoman's only killed citizens who opposed them after the surrender.
  • Soon after, the Ottoman empire repopulated Constantinople with a variety of different ethnicity and faiths. The Roman empire was no more, and with the capitol being moved into Constantinople, the seats of power were filled by multi-cultural people.
  • Due to fear of being killed or prosecuted against, many Greeks left Constantinople. The exodus of Greeks into Italy was seen as the end of the Middle Ages and the start of the Renaissance.
  • A prime example of how the fall of Constantinople led to discovery was Christopher Columbus. Evidence points towards Columbus being a Greek immigrant. Not only did he make many discoveries (whether or not he was first to make them).
  • There have been negative consequences however. There is a standing bias and prejudice against Turks withing Europe. Turkey is often looked down upon as it is on Greek lands.
