People in Maycomb keep whispering about Atticus's upcoming trial defense. This reminds Scout to ask Atticus what “rape” is. When Aunt Alexandra learns that the children attended Calpurnia’s church last week, she denies Scout's request to go back the next Sunday.
You may not.
I didn't ask you!
Later, she tries to convince Atticus to fire Calpurnia, claiming that they no longer need her. Atticus refuses and calls Cal a member of the family. He says they couldn't have managed without her.
Alexandra, Calpurnia's not leaving the house until she wants to.
Both of you go to bed right now
Scout is angry at being lectured for disrespecting Aunt Alexandra's authority. Jem threatens to spank her like a child, so she attacks him. Atticus breaks up the fight and sends them to bed.
Scout, try not to antagonize Aunty, hear?
You tryin to tell me what to do?
Scout stepped on something warm and alive. Assuming it was a snake, she called Jem to check it out. He looked under the bed, and found Dill!
What are you doing here???
Dill?!
But really, he ran away was because his parents never gave him enough attention. So he took $13 from his mother's purse, caught the 9 PM train from Meridian to Maycomb and walked to the Finch home.
My new stepfather locked me in the basement in chains, so I ripped the shackles off of the walls, then joined the circus until I made it close enough to Maycomb to return to you, friends!
Dill claimed this parents wouldn't miss him and begged the Finches not to send him back. Atticus asks Scout to get Dill some food. Atticus informs Dill’s aunt, Miss Rachel, of his whereabouts. Dill eats, then sleeps over at the Finch house.
