  • Although no scientists believed him, he didn't give up his search for evidence.
  • Wegner originated a theory of a supercontinent called Pangea.
  • In 1915 he then proposed a theory of a "continental drift", which was later supported by my discovery of ocean ridges!
  • This is Alfred Wegner.
  • These boundaries usually consist of mountains or volcanoes, like Kilauea in Hawaii.
  • When two plates of the same density collide, they create uplift when they push up against each other.
  • There are three types of convergent boundaries. Continental-continental, oceanic-continental, or oceanic-oceanic.
  • This is a convergent boundary.
  • The mid-atlantic ridge is a perfect example of a divergent boundary
  • This is a divergent boundary. It's a boundary where two plates move away from each other due to rising magma forming new crust in between them.
  • Here we have a transform boundary. A boundary where two plates slide past each other without crust being neither created nor destroyed.
  • The San Andreas Fault located in California is a big transform boundary!
  • Transform boundaries cause earthquakes, landslides, and mudslides.
  • Large convection currents in the asthenosphere transfer heart to the surface, allowing less dense magma to break apart plates at their opened center.
  • To make all of these plates move, a convection current is necessary.
  • Once plates move away from each other, the rocks with the higher density are consumed in subductuon zones.
  • As the leading edge of the plate sinks, it pulls the rest of the plate behind it.
  • As cooling lithosphere sinks, the asthenosphere moves away from it and pushes the bottom of the plate.
  • Since we live in the North American plate, we are in danger of earthquakes and volcanic activity. Since most of the population is located near mountains or earthquakes, we would greatly be affected by those tectonic plate movements.
