632 AD- Abu-Bakr, the the first caliph and the next three elected- Umar,Uthman, and Ali. They used the Qur'an and Muhammad's actions as guides to their leadership and for that they were known as the “rightly guided” caliphs.

656 AD- Uthman was murdred. It started a civil war since others struggled for power. Ali as muhhamads cousin and son in law was Uthmans successor. But in 661, Ali was also killed.
Ali will have to be the successor.
750 AD- The Abbasids came to power. They killed the remainingmembers of the Umayyad family. A prince named Abd al-Rahman escaped theslaughter and fled to Spain. He set up an Umayyad caliphate there.

762 AD- The Abbasids moved the capitalof the empire in new city, Baghdad, in central Iraq. The locationon key trade routes gave the caliph access to trade goods, gold , etc.

1258 AD- Abbasid caliphate lasted from 750 to1258. The Abbasids mostly increased their authority by reli-gious leaders. But they could not keep political control.
