- 632 AD- Abu-Bakr, the the first caliph and the next three elected- Umar,Uthman, and Ali. They used the Qur'an and Muhammad's actions as guides to their leadership and for that they were known as the “rightly guided” caliphs.
- I will uphold what Muhammad stood for!
- Rest In Peace.
- 656 AD- Uthman was murdred. It started a civil war since others struggled for power. Ali as muhhamads cousin and son in law was Uthmans successor. But in 661, Ali was also killed.
- Ali will have to be the successor.
- 750 AD- The Abbasids came to power. They killed the remainingmembers of the Umayyad family. A prince named Abd al-Rahman escaped theslaughter and fled to Spain. He set up an Umayyad caliphate there.

- 762 AD- The Abbasids moved the capitalof the empire in new city, Baghdad, in central Iraq. The locationon key trade routes gave the caliph access to trade goods, gold , etc.

- 1258 AD- Abbasid caliphate lasted from 750 to1258. The Abbasids mostly increased their authority by reli-gious leaders. But they could not keep political control.
