  • Good evening, I am Lizzie McColumn here to represent on the student’s behalf of standardized testing within our school. On my left is Molly Kemitt, a student-educator who is here to advocate for the teachers who administer standardized testing.
  • Our goal in this assembly is to provide insight towards the strain standardized test have on students, and educators throughout the course of the school year.

  • As a student who has been forced to take standardized test, I feel that these assessments are unnecessary to the success of students. In fact, test anxiety is prevalent in many students forced to take exit exams as 20% of their final grades. Imagine having to take a written exam for all the courses you take including those like chorus and dance. As you approach the day of the test, imagine not being able to sleep as the result of anxiety but expected to perform well to achieve a credit and be an asset to data. What about the students who are horrible test takers? I could have a 95% as my grade point average, however, once I've made a50% of the exam, my grade has plummeted. Imagine not being able to stay in honors classes because you could not concentrate on an exam. Believe it or not, many students are faced with these challenges and given no explanation as to why. Except for a usual, "you should have studied more" or "why did you wait until the last minute?".

  • Yes, Ms. McColumn has made an excellent point as it regards to the stress put on students as the result of being forced to complete standardized test for a portion of their final grade. From an educator standpoint, in many instances I am not aware of the results given by standardized testing. It does not help me to become a better teacher but takes time from teaching the needed material in an 18-week course. As an educator. I see students shaking in their seats as they take a test, due to the amount of emphasis put onto their test. Sometimes students are tested before I have completed teaching the unit. It is not a good feeling to know your students may be ill-equipped with the skills needed to take the test. Due to the stressed importance of this test, the students can either perform effectively or perform below level. Therefore, to use the data collected from these tests would be inaccurate and not a useful resource for students nor educators.

  • So, while many of you may debate that we have always taken standardized test in this manner, and there seems to be no problem. Think about the last time you asked a student how they felt about being forced to complete assessments to gain the credits needed to graduate high school.
  • It is time for us to act as administrators and educators to support our children in changing the way testing is viewed. It is time for us to stop graduating the tradition of standardized testing and find new ways to make sure students are learning without putting any pressure on them to perform. It is time to acknowledge the truth: We are not supporting our students as it regards to testing.
