  • Ignatius was born inside the ancestral castle of the Loyola's within the Basque province of Guipúzcoa, the youngest of 13 children in a noble and rich family, his mum died when he was seven years old (1506). In 1517 Ignatius grew to become a knight within the service of another relative, Antonio Manrique de Lara, Duke of Nájera and Viceroy of Navarre, who employed him in military undertakings and on a diplomatic mission.
  • After his pilgrimage St Ignatius learned that it was God’s will that he should not stay in Jerusalem, he pondered in his heart what he should do and finally decided to study for a time in order to be able to help people. he studied in 3 universities over 12 years (Alcala University, College Sainte-Barbe, and University of Paris). by this time he had started to gain followers for his actions
  • The final period of Loyola’s life was spent in Rome or its vicinity. In 1539 St Ignatius and his followers decided to form a permanent union, adding a vow of obedience to a superior elected by themselves to the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience to the Roman pontiff that they had already taken. In 1540 Pope Paul III approved the plan of the new order. Loyola was the choice of his companions for the Leader of this new company. It was called the Society of Jesus
