Tove was born in 1914 in the city of Helsinki.
Her father, Victor, was a sculptor, and her mother, Signe - an artist.
Little Tove learned to draw before she could walk.
One night, when Tove climbed into the pantry in search of something tasty, and her uncle teased her:
The "moomins" will catch you!
Tove's first book "Sarah and Pelle and Neptune's Children" was published when she was 13 years old. No one was surprised that she became an artist. Tove drew illustrations, and her special sense of humor was reflected in her cartoons for the satirical magazine Garm.
In 1935, she began to draw funny fairy-tale creatures, similar to the famous Moomin trolls. Then they were not yet the cute creatures as we know them today. On the contrary, they looked pretty creepy. However, even worse things happened in the real world. In 1939, war broke out in Europe. Tove, like many others, was very upset by this fact. She needed an escape into another, fictional reality. She chose the evilest creature she had invented naming him Moomin, and sat down to invent a fairy tale:
Once upon a time
In 1945,was published a new book. In it, the lost creatures were looking for their relatives and in the end they found happiness in the Valley of the Moomins. While in the real world, people were looking for their loved ones all over Europe.
