- Perks of Being a WallflowerBy Stephen Chbosky
- "Patrick, Could you pull the to the side of the road?" (Chbosky 25)
- "Drive!" (Chbosky 25)
- After the school dance, Patrick drives Sam and Charlie home is Sam's pickup truck. As the three were approaching the Fort Pitt Tunnel, Sam asks Patrick to pull the truck to the side of road. Charlie watches in confusion, but Patrick seems to understand what Sam is going to do.
- Patrick pulled over and Sam got out of the pickup truck. She began climbing into the back that was open and kneeled down eagerly. Sam shouted to Patrick to continue driving and go through the tunnel while Charlie continued to watch bewildered.
- Sam stood up in the back of the pickup truck once they were in the tunnel. Her hair galloped by the wind and she outstretched her arms as the sound was absorbed in a vacuum. Charlie watched in amazement and Patrick smiled with delight.
- "And in that moment, I swear we were infinite" (Chbosky 26).
- Patrick played a tape recorder that began to play the song, Landslide. The group began to scream and sing and laugh along taking in the free moment of the wind rushing by and the loud sounds screaming in their ears.
- As the pickup truck exited the tunnel, they entered a landscape of lights streaming down from the city buildings. Sam sat down in the back and she began to laugh. Patrick and Charlie joined in, taking in the good and surreal moment.
- While Patrick continues to drive the truck, Charlie has a sensation of feeling free from all the things in his life that are bad or confusing or have found a way to hurt him. In this moment with his friends doing nothing but driving and screaming and feeling loose, Charlie has nothing to worry about.
