Today's topic is Rainwater harvesting in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. Yet another topic on rainwater harvesting, I really enjoyed the last one!
Welcome to GeoIn !
Yes! The last discussion about rainwater harvesting in Rajasthan was very interesting. This time it is about rainwater harvesting in Tamil Nadu and West bengal. I am excited to discuss about this today.
Rainwater harvesting in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal are very different. In Tamil Nadu rooftop rainwater harvesting is practised while in West Bengal, water is harvested through the Inundation canal sytem.
Yes! and they are used to not only meet agricultural needs but also for domestic needs. And do you know? Unlike West Bengal where the water harvested is mainly used to meet our needs, in Tamil Nadu, rainwater harvesting is mainly done to rejuvenate freshwater water sources and improve ground water levels .It is done by redirecting the collected rainwater from rooftop to the ground through pipes. In Tamil Nadu there was even an ordinance passed which made water harvesting compulsory for all houses across the state!
What is Inundation canal system?
Those canals that carry overflow water from rivers and other water bodies to the field for irrigation makes up the Inundation canal system right?
Isn't it interesting both these states have very different methods and purposes for rainwater harvesting, despite being part of the same country?
Thank you!!
This shows how diverse each region of India is.
This also gives us a glimpse of how broad the concept of rainwater harvesting is.
