There once was a goddess named Demeter, she had a daughter named Persephone. They were both loved by all humans and were kind and caring.
Persephone was with Artemis and Athena picking flowers for her mother when she smelled a flower that she wanted for her mother. So she followed the scent which led her away from her friends.
Suddenly darkness spread around her, and Hades appeared, sweeping her into his chariot and into the underworld.
In the underworld, Persephone cried and refused to eat because of legends that if you ate in the underworld you could never return. Everyday Hades would show Persephone the underworld and try to persuade her to stay and marry him.

Demeter was feeling sad and hopeless and threatened to not let crops prosper. So, Zeus sent his messenger Hermes, to bring Persephone back. He had to hurry though, Persephone had fallen in love with Hades and agreed to eat seeds from a fruit.
Hermes was too late, Persephone had eaten six seeds already. But, Hades and Hermes negotiated and agreed that Persephone could be in the underworld for six months and for the other six months she would be with Demeter. So, every spring Demeter makes the Earth pretty for the return of her daughter.
