  • Hi, Mr. Lewis! It's such an honor to meet you! My teacher told me to ask you a really good question, so here it is: What experiences led you to wanting to be a Congressman?
  • Hi, Johnny. I was a young man during an important time in our nation's history: the Civil Rights Era of the 1960s, but my journey started when I was much younger...your age, in fact. Let's go to my office and chat some more.
  • When I was young, Black folks had to use different bathrooms than White folks. We had to use different water fountains, different pools...these experiences of discrimination told me it was time to make some changes...but I didn't yet know how. I always thought I'd be a pastor at a church one day, but God had different plans for me.
  • I also got the chance to March on Washington and express our frustration with the Kennedy administration's slow changes to civil rights legislation. These early opportunities to influence the political landscape of our country for people of color is what made me serve 17 terms as a Congressman for Georgia.
  • As one of the original freedom marchers who got badly beaten, I knew our work was important...no matter the personal cost. I was the chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, known as SNICK (SNCC), until 1966.
