Storyboard Text

  • In July 1534, Cartier and his men landed in Gaspe and met the Haudenosaunee and their leader named Donnacona. Cartier took the chief's two sons named Taignoagny and Domagaya to teach them the European Culture. Jacques Cartier returned with 110 men on three ships in 1535 and explored the St. Lawrence region. Cartier stayed the winter because him and his crew didn't have the proper supplies. His crew became ill and died of scurvy( Lack of Vitamin C ).

  • Jacques Cartier and his men set sail in 1534 to find a passage through North America to Asia for riches. They travelled through Belle Isle Straits and across the bay of the St. Lawrence River.
  • Jacques Cartier forcefully took Donnacona and 9 other men of the Haudenosaunee to Europe in 1536 to prove to the king that there are riches. In 1542 Jacques Cartier travelled back to the Haudenosaunee with only 1 Haudenosaunee member because the other 9 died in Europe. Cartier lied and told the Haudenosaunee people that the ones that died were alive and well in Europe but the people didn't believe him.
  • Donnacona died in 1539 But Jacques Cartier told the Stadacona people that he was living like a king in France. Jacques Cartier's third voyage was to find the Saguenay and also to create a French colony. Jacques cartier never found a land of riches and failed to set up a permanent French colony
  • Cartier and his men landed off the coast of Newfoundland and entered the gulf of St. Lawrence River and met the Mi'kmaq tribe. Cartier and his men traded knives and other iron goods for fur from the Mi'kmaq.
  • The Haudenosaunee had the cure for Scurvy but they had to build trust with the French. The Haudenosaunee taught the french to boil and drink White Cedar Tea
  • Cartier lied and told the Haudenosaunee people that the ones that died were alive and well in Europe but the people didn't believe him. The Haudenosaunee became hostile towards the French. Jacques Cartier was forced back to France because of the brutal winter and he took the fools gold back with him.
  • On september 1st, 1557, Jacques Cartier died
