Mythology is the study of myths. Myths are a kind of story that deal with the human condition, as well as nature. They were made up to explain certain phenomenons. Myths are important in many religions.
Today, we will be seeing a couple of my favorite ancient Greek myths.
The ancient Greeks had a full pantheon of gods and goddesses. The gods and goddesses were flawed and often committed terrible deeds, unlike later deities. The gods included Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, Apollo, Hermes, Ares, etc. The goddesses included Hera, Athena, Artemis, Persephone, Demeter, etc.
Zeus (King of the Gods)
Gods
Poseidon (God of the Sea)
Hades (King of the Underworld and NOT EVIL)
Hera (Queen of the Gods)
Goddesses
Athena (Goddess of wisdom and war)
Persephone (Queen of the Underworld)
Heracles (Completed 12 impossible labors)
There were also many heroes and monsters in Greek mythology. Heroes were often either demigods (the children of gods and mortals) or favorites chosen by the gods. They often fought terrifying monsters to the death. Heroes included Heracles (Hercules is the Roman spelling), Theseus, Achilles, etc. Monsters included the Minotaur, Medusa, the Cyclops, etc.
Theseus (Killed the Minotaur and became King of Athens)
Heroes
Achilles (Nearly invincible warrior who fought in the Trojan War)
Minotaur (Man-eating beast which was half-bull and half-human)
Monsters
Medusa (Had serpents for hair and turned people into stone)
Cyclops (One-eyed giant)
Heracles was the son of Zeus and a mortal woman. This angered Zeus' wife, Hera, who punished the now-adult Heracles by making him kill his entire family. Heracles was given 12 labors to complete in order to be forgiven. Heracles, with the help of his superhuman strength, was able to complete all of the tasks, and was not just forgiven, but later ascended to Olympus to reunite with his father and stepmother.
The Trojan War was fought between the Greeks and the Trojans because the Trojan prince stole the wife of the Spartan king. The Greeks eventually win the war by pretending to lose and giving a wooden horse as a "present". However, the present is a trap and Greek soldiers spring out and massacre the population. Troy is burned to the ground, never to rise again. Historians believe that the war was based on a real event, though the story is clearly exaggerated.
The Odyssey is sort of the sequel to the story of the Trojan War. It is about Odysseus, a soldier of the Trojan War returning home. However, he gets lost and explores all throughout the Mediterranean region to places such as the Aegean Sea, Italy, and even North Africa. On the way, he encounters various crazy creatures, such as evil mermaids, cyclopes (actually based on real life dwarf elephant skulls), and witches. However, Odysseus is loyal and persistent, which eventually pays off when he gets to his home.
